E3D Hemera Bowden Assembly vs Direct Assembly

I see that there are instructions for the E3D Hemera which I’m really confused about. Both the instructions have some Bowden adapter and the extruder stepper is on the head. What’s the difference and why is there a difference? I had the same issue when I bought the E3D V6 hotend. Ordered the direct drive version but had a Bowden tube clip and worked fine. Am I missing something?

Hi Nate,

A Direct Hemera setup is ideal for users wanting more control over filament for example in situations where you are looking to print flexible filaments. In direct mode, Hemera is an extruder and hotend in one (mounted on the X or XY gantry) feeding filament ‘directly’ into the HotSide without the length of PTFE (Bowden tube)

A Bowden Hemera setup is where the Hemera is used only as an extruder feeding filament through a PTFE (Bowden tube) to a hotend mounted on the X or XY Gantry. The additional Bowden tube adds Lag to the system making flexible filaments more difficult to print with, however, you remove moving mass from the print head making artefacts like ringing reduced at higher printing speeds.

In a direct setup the heatbreak of the HotEnd screws directly into the Hemera heatsink.

In a Bowden set up a Bowdaptor (something you plug the PTFE tube into) screws into the heatsink.
