Recommended procedure for changing filament?

In your trouble shooting guide you warn about the dangers of excessive retraction and pulling melted filament into the cool region. Do you have a recommended procedure to use when removing/changing filament? (PLA? ABS? PETG?)

You can just pull it out by hand. That way, you can ensure that you take out the filament fast enough that it doesn't have time to freeze. You don't need to be very fast, I've never encountered anyone who's jammed they're HotEnd halfway through pulling out the filament.
